What has Japan got in store for Londoner Bryan Jenkins as he begins
his new life as a stay-at-home husband in Tokyo!?

What is Home Sweet Tokyo?

Home Sweet Tokyo was an English-Language Japanese Television show that aired on NHK's World TV service between 2017 and 2020.

In the show, 36-year-old British expat Brian Jenkins (played by BJ Fox) moves to Tokyo after his Japanese mother-in-law passes away. Brian is also joined by his wife Itsuki (Yoshino Kimura), his daughter Alice (Isla Rose), and his Japanese father-in-law Tsuneo (Tetsu Watanabe). In Season 4, Tsuneo's great-niece Setsuko (Mone Kamishiraishi) joins the cast, as Itsuki is away on a business trip for the entirety of that season.

In each episode, Brian learns about a new aspect of life in Japan. In one episode he may be figuring out how to make the perfect bento, while in another he might be visiting a bath house for the first time.

Why is it considered lost media?

Typically, when NHK releases a show for their NHK World TV service, episodes of said show are hosted on the NHK World website as VODs for a limited time, along with being aired on Live TV of course.

Once those episodes are gone from the website, they are gone for good. Like many other shows in the NHK World library, Home Sweet Tokyo has suffered this same fate.

Are there any traces of its existence left?

Several, actually. For one, the Internet Archive has a few of the original web pages for Home Sweet Tokyo saved. Secondly, a YouTube channel has published the first two seasons of the show in a playlist.

I don't know if this third one counts, but my own recollection of certain episodes might also be useful information. After all, most lost media wiki articles start with someone remembering something, but not being able to find tangible evidence of it existing.

Overall, I think it's safe to say that Home Sweet Tokyo is more "partially found" media than completely lost. Still, there's plenty of related content that is no longer accessible anywhere. My goal with this section of the site is to archive as much information on Home Sweet Tokyo as possible and provide a potential starting point for others to do their own research.
