Episode Description:

Bryan loves Japanese horror films... or at least he thought so, until he somehow found himself as the star of his own scary movie! What was supposed to be a nice birthday trip to a mountain hot spring with his wife and daughter takes a mysterious turn, when he learns way more about Japanese ghosts and yokai than he ever wanted to!

Webmaster's Remarks:

Based on the intro for this one, I'm guessing this was supposed to be a Halloween release. But of course with the release schedule being what it is, this was released well after Halloween.

The main story of this episode is that it's Bryan's birthday, and the family (excluding Tsuneo for some reason) is headed to stay at an onsen. An onsen is a traditional Japanese inn, usually with a hot spring attached to it. While this episode, like others, covers an aspect of Japanese culture (in this case, the onsen), the true plot soon reveals itself.

Along with onsens, this episode covers the phenomenon of yokai. Yokai are supernatural beings, often blamed for mysterious and unexplained happenings. You may already be familiar with yokai from other sources of Japanese pop-culture (my personal introduction being in the form of a video game series, Yokai Watch).

Overall, One Night at the Onsen takes a break from the usual "Slice of Life" formula that Home Sweet Tokyo is known for in order to bring us a very scary, yet entertaining, episode!
